Newport Beach - Nov. '07

Took my first trip to Newport Beach on Friday and Saturday. I needed to learn how to successfully tie off as the moors in Newport are much different than those used in Catalina.

Let me just start by saying, Catalina's system is FAR superior. Basically, to tie off to the mooring cans at Newport you have to get in your dinghy and string a temporary mooring line from can to can. All the while someone needs to be circling your boat like an aircraft in a holding pattern for landing. Then you head back to your boat and with a line pole grab the temporary mooring line and tie off the boat. Then back to the dinghy to tie off the real bow and stern lines. Once tied off the temporary line is removed and stowed.

Whew...that's a lot of work especially in the dark...which was the case this time. If this is your first time I'd recommend doing it during the day.
