We're gearing up for our trip to Santa Cruz Island this summer. The plan is to spend the better part of a week at two anchorages on Santa Cruz Island.
About Santa Cruz Island
Santa Cruz Island is one of the five islands that comprises the Channel Island National Park. The Channel Islands are located off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. Click here to learn more about Santa Cruz Island.
The island provides the following great activities:
- Kayaking, sea caves are plentiful
- Snorkeling and diving
- Fishing
- Swimming
- Hiking
- Marine life and bird watching
- Beach combing
- Relaxation
We've been planning for several months now and the planning continues. These are the some of the planning points of interest:
- Determining which anchorages provide the best protection and access to pursue our interests while at the island
- Determine if Bella has the correct ground tackle necessary to safely anchor at Santa Cruz
- Learn and understand weather and marine conditions and how they affect anchorages
- Research and practice anchoring techniques
- Plan for electric power for the week away from shore power
- Acquire gear: kayaks, snorkeling equipment, generator
- Plan and chart the trip north to Santa Cruz
- Reserve slip in San Buenaventura (Ventura) for weekend stay following our Island stay
- "Cruising Guide to Southern California Offshore Islands", Brian M. Fagan
- Hiking on Santa Cruz Island
- Sailwhisper blog entry
- Email conversations with Capt. Dan of "Sail Channel Islands"
- Conversations with other sailors who have sailed and anchored at Santa Cruz Island
- Other research on the internet
